Over 39 years and 3 million dollars ago, the Denver Rustlers had an idea. It was an economic downturn, and the junior livestock sale at the Colorado State Fair was hurting. At the urging of the late Representative Tom Farley, Tim Schultz (then Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture) approached Dick and Eddie Robinson, as well as Larry A. Mizel, asking them to step in and make sure the hardworking 4-H and FFA youths could continue to participate and raise money for their future education. The three rallied their friends and colleagues to invest in these kids by supporting their livestock sale.
The livestock sale, and the Denver Rustlers, are now thriving and bidding. In this 150th anniversary for Colorado and 250th birthday of our nation, supporters once again boarded the bus after filling bellies at Shanahan’s (see sister Spotlight coverage) and showed up in their special Rockmount Ranchwear shirts (courtesy of MDC Holdings/Richmond American Homes Foundation) and joined local philanthropists to make sure our young FFA and 4H members have a bright future.
